National Development Planning Commission
Ghana is strengthening sustainable financing for nutrition by integrating it into how districts plan, budget and implement development programmes.
Delivering a presentation on “Ghana’s Experience with Decentralized Nutrition Budgeting and Public Financial Management Improvements” at the ongoing 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum held in Accra on 29 September 2026, on behalf of the Director-General of the Commission, A Principal Planning Analyst, Mr Nii-Odoi Odotei, explained that districts are integrating multisectoral nutrition priorities into their Medium-Term Development Plans (MTDPs). This gives nutrition interventions a place in district budgets and provides a basis for tracking their implementation.
The approach brings together action across health, education, social protection and food systems. It also connects national priorities, including the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework 2026–2029 and Ghana’s Nutrition for Growth commitments, to programmes and resources at the local level.
“Integrating nutrition into district plans and budgets,” he noted, provides a practical pathway for translating national nutrition priorities into actions at the local level, while creating a basis for tracking the implementation of planned interventions.
The approach is intended to support more consistent financing for nutrition and ensure that nutrition priorities are reflected in district development planning and budgeting.
The 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum brought together stakeholders to share experiences and explore practical approaches to strengthening nutrition action and financing in the face of changing development and environmental challenges.
